Anodyne Treatment Q & A

What is Anodyne treatment?

Anodyne treatment uses the Anodyne Infrared Therapy System, a medical device that increases circulation and helps to relieve pain, muscle spasms, and stiffness. In 1994, the Anodyne Therapy System became the first FDA-approved infrared light therapy product and is still the leading evidence-based light therapy treatment.

Anodyne treatment uses infrared LEDs (light-emitting diodes), whose light penetrates deeper into your body than therapeutic red or blue light and works more effectively. You can't see infrared light, but your body responds to it, improving the flow of blood into the tissues and easing pain.

Increasing blood flow into your legs helps deliver higher quantities of oxygen, nutrients, and healing cells that restore health to your feet and reduce the symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Why might I need Anodyne treatment?

Dr. Berlin might recommend Anodyne treatment if you have neuropathy in your feet. Neuropathy is pain and other sensations coming from damaged or malfunctioning nerves, and in the feet, this is typically due to diabetes.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes that arises from the damage high blood glucose levels cause to your nerves. It can affect your hands and other areas, but it's most likely to occur in your feet.

You might experience pain, tingling, or prickling sensations and sometimes numbness. The problem can become serious in some patients because diabetes slows down blood flow to your legs as well, leaving the feet vulnerable to open wounds called ulcers.

Anodyne treatment offers an effective, drug-free method of addressing your symptoms while at the same time improving blood flow. Better blood flow lowers your risk of developing diabetic ulcers, which are painful, prone to infection, and require specialized wound care.

What does Anodyne treatment involve?

Anodyne treatment is available on-site at Eastside Foot & Ankle Clinic, P.C. To receive your therapy, you lie on a comfortable treatment table, and Dr. Berlin wraps the Anodyne therapy pads around your feet. These pads contain 60 infrared diodes that deliver a considerable amount of infrared energy to your feet.

Anodyne treatment isn't painful, requires no anesthetic or other drugs, and is completely noninvasive. You just lie back and relax for 30 minutes while the energy penetrates the blood vessels and other tissues in your feet.

After your Anodyne treatment, you can carry on about your day as normal. You should notice some improvement after one or two sessions, but optimal results may require additional treatments. Chronic conditions typically benefit from regular sessions.
